1. Latin name: Chelonoidis carbonaria
2. Red-foot tortoises have red scales on the limbs, as well as red, yellow, and/or orange facial markings
3. They average 30 centimetres as adults, but can reach over 40 cm
4. The largest known red-footed tortoise was 17.75 inches (45 cm) in length!
5. This species is also called the red leg tortoise or savanna tortoise!
6. Recent fossil discoveries of this species from the Pleistocene period (~ one million years ago) have been found on the island of Anguilla in the Lesser Antilles.
7. Red-footed tortoises are also called the “jabuti-piranga” by local people!
8. Red-footed tortoises can live around 50 years

10. Omnivores mainly eating fruits, mushrooms, vines, grasses, succulents, snails, ants, termites, bees, beetles,
11. Males fight one another for access to females during the breeding season
12. Females lay eggs between July and September
13. Clutch sizes vary from 2 to 8 eggs
14. Egg incubation period is generally 100 to 200 days
15. During mating males make a clucking sound that sounds amazingly like a hen.
